Which post-high school program suits you the best ?
If you want to continue your studies after high school in France, you can choose between a professional program (designed to teach you a specific profession) or a general program (leading to a master’s degree or even a PhD).
There is no such thing as a “better” or “worse” program, it’s all about finding the right fit for your profile!
Professional Programs
Professional or vocational programs (such as Bachelor, BUT, BTS, BPJEPS, IFSI, DEUST & DNMADE) offer courses that combine both practical and theoretical learning with numerous internships. Often, you also have the option to study through a work-study format (called « alternance »). These programs are designed for students who prefer hands-on experiences (practical cases, work-study, internships) and/or need close guidance(small, high-school-style groups, personalized support, …). Upon completing these programs, you can either enter the job market or continue your studies.
General Education Programs
Then, there are the so-called general education programs (such as CPGE, PASS / LAS, Grande École programs, Engineering Cycles, Bachelor’s Degrees, CMI, CPES, Double Degree, and BBA…). These programs are tailored for independent students who aim to pursue long-term studies (at least 5 years). They are structured into these two phases: the first focuses on building foundational and theoretical knowledge (2 to 3 years), while the second allows for specialization and professional development. International opportunities and dual degrees are often available during these programs.
